The Learning Cycle
In the following explanation the term "word" is also used to include "phrase".
The Learning Cycle begins with Listening and understanding; understanding
the sounds and the spellings of foreign words. This is the first stage in the cycle
and the reason why it is recommended that Reading and Listening is chosen first.
The second stage in the cycle is recalling the foreign word. Thus the native
word is used as a prompt and the student should recall the foreign word both in
sound and appearance.
The third stage is recognition again. To enable the word to be fully etched in
the mind, it is translated into the native language and typed character by character.
The final stage is recalling the foreign word both as a sound and its spelling.
In all stages of the cycle it is recommended that the foreign word is always spoken
out loud and compared with the native speaker. Try to make it sound as similar as
possible to the original. Use the speaker button to repeat the pronunciation as many
times as necessary until you are sure you have the sound imitated.
